Prague, June 29 (CTK) – The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) President Eva Zazimalova will give the Otto Wichterle Award to 24 outstanding and promising young scientists in the Villa Lanna in Prague today and a part of the award is a premium of nearly 450,000 crowns for its winner. Barbora Pafčo, from IVB was one of 24 supported researchers.
Barbora Pafčo (b. 1988) has been researching the evolution and ecology of parasites since studying biology at Masaryk University. She specializes in the transmission of pathogens between wild animals, especially primates, and humans. Her research is important not only because of the direct impacts on human and animal health, but also in terms of the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems. Other scientific specializations of the young scientist include the study of microbiomes in apes including humans. Barbora Pafčo, who has been working at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology of the CAS since 2018, also deals with the diagnosis of parasites in primates in the field. Over the last ten years, she has completed several field trips in Africa: the Central African Republic, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Rwanda. She collaborates with prestigious workplaces in the USA (Cornell University in Ithaca, University of Minnesota) and in Japan (Kyoto University, University of Oita).
