The project subject is the comprehensive implementation of conservation measures for the Little Owl according to the approved “Action plan for the Little Owl (Athene noctua) in the Czech Republic”. The activities will be implemented according to the priority zones of the action plan to ensure favourable conditions for the preservation and development of the Little Owl population in Czechia.
The project includes the following activities:
1. Elimination of anthropogenic traps in the vicinity of all known and potential nesting sites
2. Securing all existing nesting sites against predators
3. Installation of 50 new nesting boxes (in localities adjacent to the occupied territories)
4. Adjustment of arable land management to min. 5 localities every year (pilot verification under which conditions mgmt can be implemented)
5. Securing of dangerous chimneys in the vicinity of known nesting sites (pilot verification of methods)
6. Ensuring appropriate timing of mowing of the road edges (cooperation with road administrators)
7. Annual detailed monitoring of nesting population in current hotspots, mapping of areas with insufficient knowledge (districts Uherské Hradiště and Kroměříž)
8. Determination of the Habitat Suitability Index, inter alia as a basis for decision-making on possible repatriations
9. Evaluation of suitability of microhabitats in the Little Owl territories as a basis for the management
10. Sociological survey among farmers, under what conditions they would be willing to voluntarily restrict rodenticides
11. Awareness-raising activities concerning the implemented activities, including a broad campaign focused on the appropriate management of lawns
The impact of the measures will be continuously monitored and subsequently adjusted to achieve the desired effect.
